HENRY DEMAREST LLOYD
Henry Demarest Lloyd was born on May 1st, 1847, to the parents Aaron Lloyd and Maria Christie Demarest Lloyd.
After graduating from Columbia College in 1867 he entered Columbia law School. after passing his bar examination two years later he was employed as an assistant secretary to the American Free Trade Association. Also joining the Young Men's Municipal Reform Association, and helped overthrow Boss Tweed the corrupt mayor of New York.
Soon after this Lloyd moved to Chicago where he began to work for
Chicago Tribune as a literary editor. he became known for writing articles that exposed topics such as: the corporates misconducts, campaigning and opposing child labor, and supporting all the workers with their labor issues. Before he knew it he married Jessie Bross daughter of
Tribune's millionaire publisher William Bross. for some time Lloyd continued to work at
Tribune until he resigned and his wife and himself were disinherited for supporting and defending the Haymarket riots. over the span of the next years Lloyd took part in the Campaign to end child labor and achieve mercy for the men being accused of the Haymarket Bombings. Lloyd also supported the causes of Women Suffrage and the Trade Union Movement. Even though he quit
Tribune that did not stop him from continuing his Muckrakering articles such as his famous one in 1881 in
Atlantic Monthly where Lloyd exposed the methods that John D. Rockefeller used in his Standard Oil business to smother competition. Lloyd was an example to follow and a leading figure in the reform movement and influenced a generation of political activist such as: John Peter Ategeld that later became a Mayor, John Dewey, and his son William Bross Lloyd who was the co-founder of the Communist Labor Party.
